I
was born in Vestaburg, Pennsylvania, a small town about
40 miles south of Pittsburgh. The town has fewer than
900 people - and not much in the way of organized entertainment.
So, I spent a lot of time hiking in the woods with friends.
That's where I developed my love of the outdoors.
I earned a Bachelor's in Chinese and a Master's in Slavic
Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh. While teaching
Russian and Spanish at the McKeesport, PA, branch of Penn
State University, I got involved in my first photo project.
I spent part of my summer vacation in Newfoundland, photographing
all over the island and enjoying every minute of it. The
slide shows that resulted from that trip were very successful.
My colleagues at Penn State were amazed that I got such
great shots with a $20 Instamatic!
After leaving Penn State, I moved to the Washington,
DC, area and began working for National Airlines. Thus
began several years of travel all over the world - and,
of course, a lot more photography and slide shows. I later
transferred to the National office in Los Angeles, and
not long after that National Airlines and Pan Am merged.
I eventually left Pan Am and began a career as a consultant.
I kept using that $20 Instamatic and still getting great
pictures up until 1982. Then I bought my first Canon A-1
SLR and set up a home darkroom. I wanted to get into male
nude photography and do my own developing and printing.
The first pictures I took with the new camera were nude
self-portraits. I had decided I couldn't ask anyone else
to do what I had not done myself. It was a very liberating
experience!
The late 1980s were spent moving around the country on
various jobs. And the photography, nude or otherwise,
suffered because of it. Anyway, I made it back to Los
Angeles in 1991 and have been building my list of models
and inventory of images ever since. I find many of my
models through my involvement in several gay male nudist
organizations, including LANG (Los Angeles Nude Guys),
CMEN (California Men Enjoying Naturism) and GNI (Gay Naturists
International).
Most jobs are dull and uninspiring and we can hardly
wait to get out of the office. But for me, photographing
the nude male is just the opposite. When I look through
the viewfinder, I can forget about all the annoyances
of the real world and just enjoy the beauty of the man
in front of my lens. And I thoroughly enjoy capturing
that beauty on film. I'll gladly work overtime and weekends
for this!!
My aim is to create beautiful images of the hunky guy
next door. I prefer models with that trim swimmer / wrestler
/ farm boy look rather than the overdone weightlifter
look. And I love photographing them outdoors. So, take
a look at the Galleries. And enjoy!
